Hoboing 70s
In the 70s, it was still relatively easy to catch out, and I traveled here and there, sometimes for the fun of “pissing out of a boxcar” and sometimes for more practical reasons. I also wrote and published a small book on traveling by freight trains at that time; I believed that it was a folk tradition that was in danger of dying out. Almost all the riders I encountered seemed to be older white guys who referred to themselves as “tramps” or “fruit tramps”. They are documented in a number of books listed on my list of books on hobos. Now my book is out of print, and I believe that hoboing is not in immediate danger of dying out. Nevertheless, I do not recommend it to those who don’t know what they are doing.
